A journalist from a local newspaper in West Lothian will compete against writers on the Daily Telegraph and Guardian.co.uk in the inaugural young sports writer of the year category at this year’s British Sports Journalism Awards.
Three young sports journalists have been shortlisted for the Ian Wooldridge trophy, named after the veteran Daily Mail sports writer who died last year.
Oliver Brown from the Daily Telegraph, Andy Bull from Guardian.co.uk and Paul Collins of the West Lothian local paper, the Linlithgowshire Journal & Gazette, will all be attempting to be the first winners of the new prize.
The Sports Journalists’ Association’s annual awards, supported by UK Sport and BT Vision, will be presented on 17 March at a gala dinner at The Brewery in London.
Among last year’s winners who will be hoping to retain their awards are the Mail on Sunday‘s Patrick Collins (columnist), Paul Kimmage of The Sunday Times (interviewer), the Independent on Sunday’s Alan Hubbard (diarist) and The Times, which won last year’s team award.
The 2006 cartoonists of the year, Kerber & Black of the Daily Mirror, have also been shortlisted, as have last year’s broadcasting successes, Jeff Stelling of Sky Sports and the BBC‘s SportsWeek radio show.
