Thank you for highlighting the concerns of the regional press about
the BBC’s “ultra-local” television services (Press Gazette, 9
September). I fear, however, that that my reported quotations may have
appeared somewhat confusing.
For clarification, I expressed the
view that the Government and the Department for Culture, Media and
Sport should not give the BBC an unrestrained remit in developing its
regional services.
Your report also omitted the example I gave of
the BBC’s work with schools and the local education authority in Hull
to develop interactive learning as an activity consistent with its
public service role.
I trust the above assists your readers’
understanding of my objections to the BBC’s unfair, publicly-funded competition against local publishers.
