The Thomson Reuters Foundation has announced an increase in its funding for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford university to £1.25m for the years 2011-2013.
The charitable body, run by the news agency Thomson Reuters, set up the RISJ in November 2009 with an initial five-year grant.
Today’s announcement amounts to an extra £200,000 over the three years, compared to the current level of funding.
The aim is for the RISJ to be “an international centre of excellence for research and debate in journalism”.
Monique Villa, Chief executive of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, said: “We are very proud of our long association with Oxford and see our support for the Institute as a critical part of the Foundation’s mission to improve the standards of journalism worldwide.
“At a time of considerable turmoil in the international media industry, the role of the Institute in producing high quality research and as a forum for public debate between practitioners, academics and policymakers, is increasingly valuable and important.”
