Tindle closes free Lambeth Post to focus on paid-for South London titles

By William Turvill

Sir Ray Tindle’s free newspaper the Lambeth Post has suspended publication just two years after it launched.

The weekly title was billed as a “community newspaper” when it was unveiled by the Tindle Group of Newspapers in March 2011.

The closure announcement comes in the same week that Tindle launched a new paid-for weekly in Greenwich.

The Greenwich Town Mercury debuted yesterday as part of the Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley Mercury series and the group said new titles are expected to join the stable.

South London Press managing director Peter Edwards confirmed the closure to Press Gazette, saying that more attention will now be given to the paid-for titles in the area, such as the Streatham and Brixton editions of the South London Press .

He said: “These newspapers are increasingly successful and we want to focus on those instead of the Lambeth Post.”

He claimed the launch of seven new South London Press editions last June had increased the paper’s circulation by more than 50 per cent.
