Ted Millward

By Press Gazette

Ted Millward, who was only the sixth editor in the 100-year history of the Kidderminster Shuttle when he was appointed in 1970, has died aged 81.

He and his wife Hilda had moved from their native Worcestershire four years ago to be nearer their three daughters in Kent.

But Hilda, 78, died in May, four days before her husband.

Ted joined the Shuttle straight from the King Charles I school in Kidderminster in 1942. He always admitted he became a newspaperman ‘by accident rather than design’after he acted on advice from his history master and obtained an interview with the editor.

After serving with the Welsh Regiment from 1944 to 1948, he rejoined his paper and was chief reporter, sports editor and news editor before being made editor. He retired in the Eighties.

He played rugby for the town club and football and cricket for village clubs.

Asked why he chose to spend his entire career with the Shuttle, his stock reply was: ‘I am at heart a country lover, a believer in small communities.’
