Sunday Herald political journalist Iain MacWhirter was last night voted in as the next rector of Edinburgh University.
MacWhirter beat Labour MSP George Foulkes to fill the three-year post, taking 69 per cent of the vote.
Respect MP George Galloway pulled out of the race last week citing the pressures of work and urged students to back MacWhirter, a political commentator for the Sunday Herald.
Prime ministers Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, Stanley Baldwin and Gordon Brown are among those to have held the post.
