Sport Magazine launches first iPad app (video)

By Dominic wireposts

Free weekly Sport magazine has today launched a free weekly iPad app.

The app does more than just mimic the magazine – it utilises iPad-friendly design templates and includes addition interactive commercial and editorial content. It is created by the existing Sport production team.

Sport’s publishers UTV are hoping that it will broaden out the reach of the magazine beyond its current footprint of London transport termini and health and fitness clubs around the country.

Sport magazine currently has a circulation of just over 300,000. The app is going to be promoted on UTV’s Talksport and other radio stations.

The app was created by Tigerspike which has also produced iPad apps for The Economist and The Times’ Eureka magazine. There are plans next year to expand the app on to other tablet devices.

My understanding is that Sport magazine is nowadays making good profits for UTV which bought it from previous owners Sport Media and Strategy after they went into administration in April 2009.
