Wilts & Glos Standard trainee reporter Jenni Silver won the right to name a violent former choir boy who left his 15-year-old victim with horrific facial injuries.
A Section 39 order had served to protect the name and identity of 17-year-old Alan Littler.
Standard news editor Simon Davies wrote a letter to the judge and Silver, who is due to sit her NCE later this year, argued that identification was in the public interest. Judge Crowther agreed the order should be lifted.
He said: "Although [Littler] is a young man, he committed an offence of such gravity that my judgement is that the public is entitled to know who is responsible for it."
Standard editor Skip Walker added: "I think Jenni and Simon did superbly between them. Simon wrote the letter to the judge and Jenni made out an excellent case in court.
"It is very pleasing to know that these challenges do work when they are made strongly enough and the role that local papers play in the justice system is forced."
