Trinity Mirror has postponed shutting one of the five weekly newspapers it ear-marked for closure last week to consider offers to buy the title.
The regional publishing giant said last week the Whitchurch Herald would cease publication this week along with two other papers in its North West and Wales division, the Wrexham Chronicle and the Mid-Cheshire Chronicle.
The company has now put-off the closure of the Herald to explore the possible sale of the title, which according to the latest circulation figures has a paid-for circulation of 3,883.
A statement from Trinity Mirror said: “The closure of the Whitchurch Herald has been postponed to enable owners Trinity Mirror North West and Wales to consider new approaches from parties interested in purchasing the newspaper title.”
Carl Wood, Trinity Mirror Cheshire publishing director, said: “There have been some developments in the last few days so we have decided to continue producing the Whitchurch Herald while discussions with interested parties take place. We will keep readers and advertisers informed of developments.”
Wrexham Chronicle and the Mid-Cheshire Chronicle are still set for closure along with two weekly papers in its Media Wales division, the Neath Guardian and Port Talbot Guardian, with combined job losses expected to number 26.
