Trinity Mirror Regionals’ head of multimedia and acting editor at the South Wales Echo, Mike Hill, has been appointed editor of the title.
The appointment reflects Wales Media’s dedication to newsroom integration with its sister titles The Western Mail, The Wales on Sunday and Celtic weeklies.
Wales Media journalists will work across all titles in a single newsroom structure and there will be a greater emphasis on the web and multimedia content.
While the group axed 10 jobs last year as part of the plans, it last week announced that it is looking to appoint six internet journalists – though some could be through existing staff.
Hill, who has been head of multimedia for Trinity Mirror Regionals for 18 months, has 14 years’ experience working on daily, weekly and free titles.
Editorial director of Media Wales, Alan Edmunds, said: ‘We welcome him (Hill) to our team in what will be a momentous year in Cardiff.”
Neil Benson, editorial director for Trinity Mirror Regionals added: “Mike’s experience in print, coupled with the wealth of knowledge he has gained while leading our multimedia development, makes him an ideal choice to lead the Echo.
‘Our Cardiff newsroom plans are truly mould-breaking, and Mike will play a full part in helping to deliver a fully-integrated, 24/7 operation.”
Hill replaces Richard Williams who resigned in October ahead of the planned restructure. Williams was editor from 2005 and oversaw the redesign of the Echo’s Saturday paper and the launch and led a number of major campaigns in South Wales.
He takes up his new role on 1 March.
