The world’s oldest columnist, Rose Hacker, has died at the age of 101.
Hacker had written a fortnightly column for the independent local newspaper the Camden New Journal since September 2006. Editor
Eric Gordon had asked her to write the column after hearing her make a speech about nuclear disarmament at a commemoration of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 inTavistock Square.
The author and sex therapist had written on a wide range of subjects including homelessness, mental illness and the threat of nuclear proliferation
After her first column was published Hacker appeared in the national press and on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour.
Regional journalists honoured Hacker at last year’s Regional Press Awards on the day it was announced she had been accepted into the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest columnist.
Hacker was taken ill and admitted to Whittington Hospital two weeks ago where she died on Monday.
