The Maidenhead Advertiser has scooped a video interview with Theresa May speaking about the future of the UK and her bid to become Prime Minister.
The video appeared on Friday after May emerged as one of the two final contenders for the Tory leadership. The paper is the local title for May’s constituency.
She was interviewed by the paper’s editor Martin Trepte and assistant editor Nicola Hine last Friday.
“I hadn’t expected us to be in this position”, she said in response to a question about why she decided to launch the bid to become the Tory Party leader.
The 59-year old Home Secretary backed the Remain side of the EU Referendum campaign but has emphasised her commitment to accept and comply with the UK’s decision. She said attempting to do otherwise “would destroy [people’s] trust” in Britain’s politicians.
May said: “I think there is an optimistic future for the UK. It’s a different future because it’s outside the European Union but I’m very clear that if I am elected leader of the Conservative Party and become Prime Minister, we need to work hard to get the best possible deal for the negotiations of our exit from the European Union and what I also want to see is the UK being a very outward-facing nation.”
The Maidenhead Advertiser runs an annual competition for local school children to design the MP’s Christmas card.
