South Wales Echo editor Mike Hill is to leave after almost threes year in the job to take up a new senior post at the University of Wales in Newport.
Hill will leave publisher Media Wales – a division of Trinity Mirror – in November when he will be succeeded by Wales on Sunday editor Tim Gordon.
An internal memo from Media Wales publishing director Alan Edmunds told staff last night about changes to the organisational set-up.
“Mike has done an excellent job as Echo editor, leading many initiatives which have developed the newspaper in first class fashion over the last three years,” Edmunds wrote.
“He has also made a major contribution to the company as a key member of our senior management team.
“He will stay with us until the end of November when he will leave with our thanks and our very best wishes for the future.”
Hill took up his role as editor of the South Wales Echo in March 2008 following the resignation of Richard Williams in October the previous year.
Prior to his appointment in South Wales, Hill had been head of multimedia for Trinity Mirror’s regional newspaper division, a key role as the publisher converted several of major publishing centres to integrated print and digital production.
Hill joined Media Wales as it integrated the production of its papers the Western Mail, The Wales on Sunday, associated Celtic weeklies and the Echo.
Changes to working practices resulted in journalists working across all titles in a single newsroom and a greater emphasis placed on the web and multimedia content.
A decision about Gordon’s replacement at Wales on Sunday and Wales Online, which he also oversaw, is expected in the coming weeks.
