Photographer who made name with “Three queens in mourning” dies aged 82

Ex-Keystone press photographer Ron Case has died aged 82.

He will always be remembered for taking one iconic image of the Queen, Queen Mother, and Queen Mary at the funeral of King George V1, on the 16 February 1952.This picture, which is always referred to as the ‘Three Queens in mourning’ is a truly haunting image, with the grieving queens clearly seen behind their veils. It also made the front pages of every single national paper the next day.

He joined the now defunct Keystone press agency after war service as a photographer with the Fleet Air Arm and travelled the world extensively, working in Paris, Tokyo, Berlin. He also covered the Vietnam war and spent some time in the far east.

He was happy covering anything from a football match, Downing Street, or the Old Bailey – news was his life.

In the seventies a change of direction took him to a regional evening paper in Southend where he spent the remainder of his career passing on his skills to younger photographers.

He leaves a wife, son and daughter.
