Peter Charlton stands down as editor of Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post

By Andrew Pugh

Peter Charlton is to stand down as editor of the Yorkshire Post after nine years in charge.

The announcement from publisher Johnston Press comes 11 months after the editorships of the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post were combined, with Charlton named editor of both titles.

Charlton, who has worked in journalism for more than 40 years, said: “After editing regional daily newspapers for the last 25 years – 21 of them here in Yorkshire – I feel it is time for me to move on to a new phase in my life.

"Editing a paper like the Yorkshire Post has been a privilege, but it is also all-consuming.”

Charlton will step down from the editorships at the end of May but will continue to act as a consultant to Yorkshire Post Newspapers.

In a statement Johnston said: “He has led the campaign for Yorkshire to get a Fair Deal from Government, presenting a bank of 60 ideas to Downing Street, and has done much to extend the brand of the Yorkshire Post in the last nine years.

“He was also responsible for the relaunch of the Yorkshire Evening Post, with daily supplements, in January.
