NUJ says Trinity Mirror proposing major cuts in Midlands

By Kate O'Sullivan

Trinity Mirror is reportedly considering closing eight weekly newspapers in the Midlands and making a number of changes to its two Birmingham dailies, the Post and the Mail.

The National Union of Journalists said it had seen internal memos outlining the proposed changes, which could save £2.5m a year.

According to the union, the Birmingham Mail could switch to overnight printing and the Birmingham Post switch from a daily to a bi-weekly or weekly title.

The NUJ claims that the closure of eight weeklies will be announced “in the next few days” and the changes to the Post and Mail will be made public in September.

Trinity Mirror refused to confirm the NUJ’s claims. A spokesman said: “We are constantly reviewing our business, particularly in the current challenging economic environment.

“As always, if we do have any plans to announce, our staff would be the first to know.”

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “It is clear these cuts are being directed by the board. Editorial staff and managers are vehemently opposed to them.”

He added: “The company needs to come clean about these disastrous plans and the community needs to stand up for quality journalism.”
