NUJ calls off Trinity Mirror strike in Coventry

By Neil Vowles

The National Union of Journalists has called off a strike planned for tomorrow at Trinity Mirror‘s Coventry Newspapers.

The move follows the decision yesterday of the Birmingham NUJ chapels to call off their strike action.

Journalists on the Birmingham Post and Mail, Coventry Telegraph and a string of weeklies were due to hold one day of industrial action over plans by the publisher for around 17 editorial redundancies and the closure of nine weekly titles in the region.

The Birmingham chapels called off their action, also palnned for tomorrow, after a confirmation from the publisher there would be no compulsory redundancies among journalists on the Post, Mail or the Birmingham-based weeklies.

The union claimed the Coverntry strike was called off after management agreed to redeploy three reporters who had been facing redundancy.

Georgina Harvey, managing director Trinity Mirror Regionals, said: “We are delighted that the NUJ have called off the strike in Coventry, which means that they have now cancelled all planned actions across our Midlands businesses. As we said at the start of this process we are committed to constructive consultation and we are extremely pleased to have achieved this outcome.”
