North’s newspapers unite in historic call for action to fix ‘broken’ rail services

By Freddy Mayhew

The north’s newspapers have joined forces in an “unprecedented show of unity” to call for Government action to fix its “broken” rail services.

More than 20 newspapers, including regional daily rivals the Manchester Evening News (Reach) and the Yorkshire Post (Johnston Press), have run the joint call for Prime Minister Theresa May to act.

The titles have been galvanised by a “period of unprecedented misery and upset” caused by the introduction of new train timetables on the Northern Rail network a fortnight ago, resulting in hundreds of delays and cancellations.

A number of newspapers ran with the splash headline: “Off the rails.”

Some, including the YP and Newcastle Chronicle, have sent reporters out on the rail network this morning to document their journeys on social media using the hashtag #OneNorth.

Editors have also joined together to table a vote of no confidence in Transport Secretary Chris Grayling.

In their editorials, both the MEN and YP said: “Following a period of unprecedented misery and upset for thousands of people, caused by a broken railway, the regional press across the north of England is today making an historic united stand to demand: enough is enough.”
