The Manchester Evening News has produced a rare late edition today as Manchester United announced the retirement of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The news was announced shortly before 10am this morning, too late for the normal print edition deadline. But a special late edition with a front page and six pages of news coverage dedicated to Ferguson was on the streets by midday.
Rumours over the manager’s retirement after 26 years at the club emerged last night and MEN’s website team had been working on the story since early this morning.
Tomorrow morning's edition of the paper is set to carry a 32-page pull-out devoted to the manager.
"It's a heck of a week to be a journalist in Manchester [with Manchester City playing in an FA Cup final this weekend],” said editor-in-chief Rob Irvine.
“Red fans in the office are unsurprisingly emotional about the end of an era but there is fevered speculation about who will fill Sir Alex's shoes."
