Luton and Dunstable titles launch campaign for the Hatters

Weekly papers the Luton News and Dunstable Gazette have launched a campaign to save football club Luton Town from a 10-point penalty and £50,000 fine.

The division two club was punished for alleged financial irregularities which the papers argue have been dealt with by the exit of staff.

Deputy editor of the Johnston Press-owned paid-for titles Steve Sims and group sports editor Mark Wood have drawn up forms to include in the print and online versions of their newspapers which argue that the punishment is unfair and inconsistent with previous rulings against other teams.

Some 2,500 have been collected so far to be presented to the FA at a later date.

‘Mark and I are both supporters and, like all fans, we were instantly appalled by the FA’s decision, so were determined to try to organise a protest,’said Sims.

So far forms have been sent in from as away as Australia, Canada, America, and Cyprus.

Local MPs and all three supporters club branches are behind the effort, and a fans demonstration is set for 12 July, when the forms will be given to the FA headquarters in London. The FA will hold an appeal hearing on 15 July.
