Paul Burton has taken over the editorship of Local World title Exeter Express & Echo.
The former Western Daily Press head of content and deputy editor was appointed acting editor of the paper when Andy Phelan left on a secondment to the Local World transformation team in January.
Former Torquay Herald Express editor Phelan joned the Echo in January 2012. He took over from Marc Astley, who now runs the Exeter Daily, a local news website for the area.
The Echo was one of a number of Northcliffe titles to switch from dailies to weeklies in September 2011.
“There’s a team full of talent in Exeter and I’m extremely pleased to be given the opportunity to carry on working with people genuinely passionate about making the Echo and EX magazine succeed,” Burton said.
“Helping the title establish itself as a weekly paper full of compelling, entertaining and relevant content while launching a new website that aspires to be the all-encompassing website Exeter deserves is a big but exciting challenge.”
Blanche Sainsbury, managing director South West Media Group, said: “Appointing Paul into position of Editor is in recognition of the hard work and commitment he has given the business since joining in January.
“He has brought new ideas for compelling content and is working alongside our commercial teams to develop new partnerships and platforms.
“I am delighted to welcome Paul to the team.”
