Herald named paper of the year at Scottish Press Awards

The Herald was the big winner at last night’s Scottish Press Awards as it collected four prizes including the coveted title of newspaper of the year.

Judges praised the Herald as a ‘trustworthy, strong from front to back and a very important observer of the Scottish scene”.

It was also praised for its ‘lively look, good photography, clean layout and clear headings”.

Lucy Adams, a reporter with the Herald newspaper, was named reporter and overall journalist of the year at the awards in Glasgow. Judges said Adams stood out for her delivery of great stories.

The Glasgow-based Herald’s fourth award came as Phil Miller was named arts/entertainment writer of the year.

In a good night for the Herald Group reporters from its sister paper, the Sunday Herald, collected the awards for feature writer and financial/business journalist of the year.

The Daily Record collected three awards, including scoop of the year for Donna Watson’s piece ‘Honeymoon Scots Catch Swine Flu in Mexico’.

The Record also collected the prize for sports news writer of the year and columnist which was won posthumously by Reg McKay for his Cancer Diaries series.

Journalists working on Scotland on Sunday were named magazine writer, sports feature writer and cartoonist of the year while sister title, The Scotsman collect two prizes.

Winner = Reg McKay, Daily Record

Runner up = Ian Bell, Sunday Herald

Campaign of the Year

Winner = Greenock Telegraph, ‘Stop Knives Save Lives’

Runner up = Evening Times, ‘Ripped Off Glasgow’

Front Page of the Year

Winner = Scottish Daily Mail ‘For My Daddy, The Hero’

Runner up = Aberdeen Evening Express ‘12.30am – And the Last Victims of Flight 85N Come Home.

Journalist Team of the Year

Winner = Aberdeen Evening Express, North Sea ‘Copter Tragedy

Runner up = Edinburgh Evening News, Tram Wars

Weekly Newspaper of the Year

Winner = Dumfries & Galloway Standard

Runner up = The Falkirk Herald

Political Journalist of the Year

Winner = Jason Allardyce, Sunday Times

Runner up = Paul Hutcheon, Sunday Herald

Sports Feature Writer of the Year

Winner = Tom English, Scotland on Sunday

Runner up = Stephen McGowan, Scottish Daily Mail

Sports News Writer of the Year

Winner = Keith Jackson, Daily Record

Arts/Entertainment Writer of the Year
