Job cuts at Johnston Press could leave a local weekly newspaper in East Anglia without an editor
The longstanding editor of the Haverhill Echo, David Hart, was told by bosses at Anglian Newspapers, Johnston’s eastern division, that his job is being considered for compulsory redundancy, according to sources close to the newspaper.
Hart has spent more than 30 years at the title, which has a circulation of just under 5,000, and is now going through a statutory consultation.
Press Gazette understands that the Echo, which has a deputy editor and two reporters, may not hire a new editor if Hart leaves.
Johnston Press is also cutting five jobs in a round of compulsory redundancies at the Sheffield Star and is shutting the paper’s Barnsley and Rotherham offices.
The National Union of Journalists group-wide chapel decided to back calls for industrial action after the cuts were announced.
Anglian Newspapers managing director Richard Parkinson was unavailable for comment.
