Former Trinity Mirror online chief Matt Kelly joins Local World as digital director

By William Turvill

Local World has appointed former Trinity Mirror digital content director Matt Kelly (pictured) as digital director.

The new role will see Kelly “lead the delivery of digital product and strategy for Local World, working closely with the broader business to strengthen its multi-platform development”.

Kelly started his journalism career in local newspapers more than 25 years ago and was, between 2007 and last year, digital publisher and director of content for national newspapers at Trinity Mirror.

During his six years in this role, Kelly developed the Mirror websites and launched MirrorFootball.co.uk and 3am.co.uk.

He also worked on a number of apps and mobile products at the publisher, including the Daily Mirror for Ipad and Mirror.co.uk across mobile platforms.

Kelly is currently based in Barcelona, Spain, working as director for Sol361 and has, according to Local World, recently played a leading role in the digital transformation of Argentinean newspaper Clarín.

He is also chairman of the Global Editors Network annual summit.

He said: “At the very core of Local World’s strategy is a profoundly transformative vision for digital content and advertising. I’m terrifically excited about joining the team.”

He will join Local World on 16 June and will report to group chairman David Montgomery.
