Roger Nicholson, who rose through the ranks to become managing director of Thomson Regional Newspapers when it was the UK’s biggest regional newspaper publisher, has died at the age of 77.
Originally from Dundee, Nicholson worked his way up to managing director at TRN, working in London, Aberdeen and Cardiff.
After he left the company in 1988, he was European director of newspaper publisher Ingersoll Publications, and later ran the small media consultancy firm Strath News.
He was a regular contributor to Press Gazette, writing about the regional press.
Aberdeen Journals managing director Alan Scott told the Press and Journal: “For all who knew him and for the newspaper industry, he will be a huge loss.
“He was a fine executive in the best tradition of the newspaper industry. Our sympathies are with the family at this time.”
Nicholson leaves a wife, Maureen, children Bruce and Jane, and grandchildren, Charlie and Eddie.
His funeral will take place in Crieff, Perthshire, next Tuesday at 11.30am.
