The former editor the South Wales Evening Post has landed a new role promoting the country’s most famous poet.
He has now been appointed chairman of the group co-ordinating the city's celebrations of the centenary of Dylan Thomas, who was born on 27 October 1914.
“This is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity for his home town to celebrate Dylan's life and work," said Feeney.
"Events already in the pipeline range from a newly commissioned opera of his most famous work, Under Milk Wood, to a book about Dylan's favourite pubs, of which there were many in Swansea, Carmarthenshire, London and New York."
He added: “I am looking forward to what it is a very different challenge for me.
“As well as marking a significant anniversary, Dylan's centenary will be an important platform for Swansea's bid to be the UK City of Culture in 2017.”
