Evening Standard executive editor James Ashton and sports editor Tim Nichols to leave title

By William Turvill

The executive editor of the Evening Standard and Independent has stepped down from his role.

James Ashton, who was formerly head of business across the titles, said: "The time is right to try something different and I’m looking forward to new challenges in journalism and beyond.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a hard-working and talented editorial team for the last four years."

He will continue to write a column for the Standard.

The announcement comes shortly after it emerged that the Standard's sports editor is leaving for the Daily Mail.

According to the Sports Journalists' Association, Tim Nichols is moving up a floor in Northcliffe House to become deputy sports editor.

Lee Clayton, the Mail's head of sport, told the website: “Tim made a huge impact when he first joined the Daily Mail as a young journalist, moving through the ranks to become news editor before moving to the Evening Standard in search of opportunities to further his career. He has proven himself to be a successful sports editor with a drive for news and he is ready to take the next step in his career."
