The Newcastle Chronicle has thought up a marketing campaign with a difference to launch its new digital strategy with a specially commissioned Viz cartoon.
Former Viz co-editor Alex Collier has produced a souvenir comic strip for the Chronicle to promote the launch of the newspaper’s new iPad edition.
‘The Chronicles of Tynanwia’ transports two pub-goers to a magical kingdom where inhabitants access their Chronicle news through a tablet. The cartoon features a selection of famous Geordies including Alan Shearer, Cheryl Cole and television hosts Ant and Dec.
“Now wuh’ze can get aal the latest, up tuh date news reet on wuh tablets in crystal clear high resolution!”, the cartoon’s characters rejoice.
A native of Newcastle, Collier said: "A cartoon in the Chronicle is another thing I can strike off my ‘things to do before you die’ list.”
The souvenir cartoon featured in the Friday 2 August newspaper edition and online. The launch of the newspaper’s iPad edition is also being supported by a television campaign, alongside editorial coverage including a search for the Chronicle’s youngest and oldest readers.
Editor Darren Thwaites said: "Many thanks to Alex for taking the thinnest of briefings and turning it into a brilliant comic strip. I'm sure readers will find it amusing and it's a great way to raise awareness as we roll into the TV campaign."
