Dundee’s The Courier switches to tabloid format

By Press Gazette

DC Thomson’s Dundee-based The Courier, one of Scotland’s last remaining daily broadsheets, is switching to a tabloid format.

It comes a month after its Aberdeen-based sister-title the Press and Journal also went fully tabloid seven years after taking its Saturday edition compact.

Editor Richard Neville said the move represented the ‘dawn of a new era’and that the company was ‘investing in new sections, increasing content across the title and investing significantly in resources”.

The first compact edition will be published on 21 January and will be printed in full colour.

The paper is adding a new Saturday lifestyle section, a property supplement and a What’s On pull-out, while its sports, business, agri-business and news sections will also be expanded.

‘At a time when most newspaper companies are retreating in the face of competition from the internet and the impact of the recession, it is fantastic to be working for a publisher that clearly sees a strong future for print – as well as digital – and has faith in the longevity of newspapers,’said Neville.

‘The potential for even more innovation and development will come later this year when our new print facility is up and running in Dundee. Readers of The Courier are in for a real treat.”

All regional daily editions, including Dundee, Fife, Perth and Angus, will adopt the new design.

The latest ABC figures for the Courier show circulation down 4.7 per cent to 61,981.
