Brian Aitken hands over editorship of Newcastle Journal for new business role

By Press Gazette

Newcastle Journal editor Brian Aitken is moving to a new role of regional business director at Trinity Mirror North-East and will be responsible for "driving new enterprise revenue streams", the publisher has announced.
Aitken has edited the Journal since 2003 and was previously editorial development manager at Trinity Mirror Regionals in Liverpool.
Trinity Mirror said that in the new role he would be in charge of forming partnerships and looking at other cross-platform commercial opportunities. He will also identify opportunities for campaigns.
A recent successful campaign for the paper saw it secure £30m to help North East companies expand.
Regional MD Russell Borthwick said: "This new role is key to us achieving our ambitions in the north east."
A Trinity Mirror spokesman said: "An announcement will follow in due course about Brian's successor. In the meantime he will take on the dual responsibilities for his current and new positions."
Aitken started his career at the Evening Express, Aberdeen, in 1978. Before going to work at Trinity Mirror head office, he was assistant sports editor on the Daily Record in Glasgow. He has also been editor of the Lincolnshire Echo.
