Birmingham Post editor Alun Thorne is leaving the paper after three years at the helm to edit Trinity Mirror sister title the Coventry Telegraph.
The Telegraph’s award-winning former editor Darren Parkin left the paper in July after being suspended over his inappropriate use of Twitter.
Thorne has edited the weekly Birmingham Post for the past three years. Trinity said he has led the paper “with great passion and conviction – qualities he will bring to the role in Coventry”.
Neil Benson, Trinity Mirror’s editorial director (regionals), said: “Alun has very clear ideas for developing the Telegraph brand across all publishing platforms, and will find a very talented team in Coventry who will play an essential role in delivering his plans.”
Trinity said Throne, 37, had been chosen from an “exceptionally strong field of internal candidates, which underlines the wealth of talent within Trinity Mirror’s newsrooms”.
He commented: “I'm extremely excited to have been given the opportunity to edit a newspaper with such a rich history and strong reputation as the Coventry Telegraph.
“I have loved my time at the Birmingham Post but I am looking forward to a fresh challenge and getting to work with a great team in Coventry as we build on the strong foundations that exist to create a compelling multi-platform offer that will secure the long-term success of this great newspaper.”
An announcement on Thorne's replacement will be made in the near future.
Parkin was the former editor-in-chief of Trinity Mirror's Coventry weeklies series and become Coventry Telegraph editor in 2009.
