Some 105 reporters have made the grade as seniors after passing the NCTJ‘s National Certificate Examination in March.
The pass rate was 57 per cent compared with 65 per cent passing in the September round of exams and 50 per cent in March, 2007.
The exams comprise a gruelling day testing journalists’ abilities to report a speech with shorthand and carry out a news interview as well as testing their knowledge of media law and newspaper practice and their ability to write a news report under pressure.
Journalists were also assessed on a logbook of work compiled from their work on local papers.
Andrew McGill from the Hunts Post won the Society of Editors’ Award for best news interview.
Nicola Park from the North West Evening Mail won the Esso Award for best news report.
Katherine Vine from the Manchester Metro News won the Ted Bottomley award for the newspaper practice paper.
Gemma Peplow from the Leicester Mercury won the Newsquest award for the best logbook.
All received prizes of £250.
