Website ABCs: Video success helps Mirror to overtake Telegraph and become third largest national newspaper website

By William Turvill

Trinity Mirror's national newspaper websites recorded a year-on-year traffic increase of 59 per cent in June and overtook the Telegraph.

Last month, Mirror.co.uk, DailyRecord.co.uk and IrishMirror.ie (grouped by ABC together as one) recorded an average of 4.3m unique users a day.

The Mirror now sits behind Mail Online (13.6m average unique daily users, up 25 per cent year on year) and The Guardian (7.8m, up 36 per cent).

The Telegraph, meanwhile, recorded an average daily unique user number of 4.1m, up 5 per cent. But the Telegraph's number dropped by 17 per cent on May's figure, when it was buoyed by a record 17m unique browsers visiting its website on 3 May (mainly thanks to its  blog coverage of a boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao).

Trinity Mirror's Liverpool Echo website was the strongest performing website audited by ABC in June, up 90 per cent to 467,766 average daily unique users.

Despite a 59 per cent year-on-year increase, the Mirror nationals websites ere down 2 per cent on May. Editorial director Pete Picton, formerly of Mail Online, said this was "expected" after the month of the general election and Princess Charlotte's birth.

He said that June brought the website's best ever month for video streaming, with 15.4m views – up 470 per cent year on year. He said: "Top performing videos included our Alton Towers streams which accumulated around 1.5 million hits, and this light-hearted stream of a tourist walking into the path of marching Queen’s Guards. Across the Group we accumulated 18.9m video hits, a rise of 249% year-on-year, and a demonstration of our fantastic growth in this area."

The Guardian said it had a record month, with 55 per cent of traffic coming from mobile and tablet devices.
