Trade union Unite sponsors weekly Daily Mirror ‘Real Britain’ column charting the effect of cuts

By Press Gazette

The Daily Mirror today launched a new editorial page sponsored by the union Unite aimed at highlighting the effects of Government cost-cutting.

Real Britain will be written by campaigning journalist and author Ros Wynne-Jones, who worked the Mirror full-time until 2008.

The weekly column aims to highlight the “harsh effects” that cuts are having on communities across the UK.

Lloyd Embley, editor-in-chief of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People, said: “We have already used Real Britain for a series of investigations into the state of the nation and we wanted to make it a permanent fixture as it fits perfectly with the core values of the Daily Mirror.

“I’m delighted Ros is joining us again as she is quite simply the best at reporting on how serious issues impact on ordinary people.”

Len McCluskey, General Secretary of Unite, said: “The Mirror has a strong tradition of campaigning journalism and Unite is proud to support its new weekly column Real Britain." Real Britain will appear in the Mirror every Wednesday.

Although the column is sponsored, Trinity Mirror said that Mirror journalists will retain editorial control.
