Times apologises for front-page Andy Murray headline

By Press Gazette

The Times has issued a correction to its front-page headline saluting Andy Murray on his Wimbledon victory.

Two weeks after it declared “Murray ends 77-year wait for British win”, the paper has pointed out that there have been four female winners of Wimbledon since 1936.

It said: “Since Fred Perry’s 1936 victory in the men’s competition, singles titles at Wimbledon have of course been won four times by British women, most recently Virginia Wade in 1977.”

The front-page headline was inside a souvenir cover wrap celebrating the victory. The Times also used a souvenir wrap today to celebrate Chris Froome's Tour de France victory.

The Times clarification was brokered by the Press Complaints Commission after a complaint under Clause 1 of the Editors' Code (accuracy).

On the same day as The Times's now-clarified headline, The Guardian apologised for a front-page headline, "Miliband to explore break with unions".

It said: "A front-page headline was wrong to say that the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, is to explore a break in the party's links to the trade unions. The article reported that Miliband would review Labour's historic relationship with the trade unions. It also said that some senior figures in the party were calling on him to break the link, but did not suggest that Miliband was endorsing that position."
