Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Terror notes journalist to speak at Media Law Conference

By Press Gazette

Shiv Malik – the journalist who today won a major victory in his legal campaign to keep his sources secret – is to be a key-note speaker at the Press Gazette and Press Association Media Law conference next Wednesday.

Malik has been battling against an order made under the Terrorism Act 2000 for him to give up all his notes in relation to his book on terrorism in the UK.

After a three-day-judicial review hearing last month – Malik today won the right not to give up his notes and so protect his sources, for the present. But the order is to be the subject of a further hearing next week.

Malik will go through the ramifications of today’s judicial review judgment and explain why he thinks his case is such a crucial one for UK press freedom.

The climax of next week’s conference will be the ‘great debate’where lawyers on either side of the argument will discuss whether conditional free agreements are a gag on freedom of speech or a vital means to provide access to justice.

There are still a limited number of tickets available for the Press Gazette and Press Association Media Law conference – and those interested in booking a ticket should contact Alex Pont, at Press Gazette, on 0207 3242379 – or email her at apont@wilmington.co.uk. Tickets for the one day conference, to include lunch and refreshments, are: £395 for lawyers and £295 for journalists
