Sun editor David Dinsmore announces shake-up of senior team with focus on digital

By Press Gazette

Sun editor David Dinsmore has announced a shake-up of his senior editor to strengthen the paper’s digital offering.

In a note to staff he said: “As you have seen from the recent press, our traditional competitors are struggling with a fundamental newspaper industry question: How do we create a profitable business in the increasingly digital world?

“My belief remains that it will be content, and specifically our journalism – that will be the deciding factor. It does mean, however, that simply producing a great paper every day is not going to be enough. Our news has to be worth paying for not just in print but across all of our platforms.

“To enable this I need you to be open to working differently. This will by its very nature mean that the way we operate and the supporting structure will change.”

The changes annonced by Dunsmore are as follows:

  • Derek Brown is appointed head of strategy to “liaise with technology and help us take advantage of new developments”

  • Steve Kennedy is appointed head of content and Sean Hamilton is deputy head of content. They will “lead all content gathering on The Sun, making sure we are getting the best stories and deploying our resources in the most efficient way possible”

  • Will Hagerty has been made head of publishing to “ lead the production of The Sun across all platforms ensuring our DNA is carried through everything we publish”. He will also be in charge of the ‘Sunday for Monday’ operation

  • Jon Moorhead has been made head of editorial projects responsible for “all future projects, campaigns and events. He will work closely with marketing to ensure a joined-up approach to what goes into our products and how we sell them”

  • Lisa Collins has been made Saturday editor

  • Steve Waring is head of editorial operations and will “lead the daily relationship with commercial and operations” –  he is also deputy editor of the Sun on Sunday on the Sunday. He has to ensure “we deliver the best products possible on time, every time”

  • Paul Hudson has been made interim night editor (news and features).
