Sky and FT digital chiefs to speak at News on the Move

By Press Gazette

Two of the leading names in digital journalism have signed up as speakers for Press Gazette's News on the Move Conference about journalism on smartphones.

The conference is being presented in association with Thomson Reuters at the agency's Canary Wharf headquarters on the afternoon of Wednesday, 7 March.

Joining two of the panels will be FT.com managing editor Rob Grimshaw and Sky News head of digital media Andrew Hawken.

Grimshaw will explain how the Financial Times is using mobile digital platforms to drive advertising revenue and subscriptions.

In July last year, the Financial Times Group reported adjusted operating profit up 3 per cent year on year to £31m on turnover up 6 per cent to £203m.

The financial performance was partly drive by paid-for digital subscriptions rising 34 per cent to 230,000 in the first half of last year.

Andrew Hawken leads all of Sky News' digital platforms including: Skynews.com, mobile services and the RTS award-winning iPhone app.

The Sky News app has been downloaded 2.5m times and has been named in Apple's top ten free UK apps of all time.

Hawken is also responsible for Sky News on iPad – an innovative app which includes video, expert analysis and interacitve graphics.

News on the Move is being organised to address the challenge posed by the explosion of news consumption on smartphones over the last 18 months – which has coincided with a sharp dip in print circulation numbers.

The event will comprise three panel sessions, plus keynote speakers to be confirmed and networking drinks afterwards. The panel discussions will be:

  • Newsgathering on smartphones
  • News publishing on smartphones
  • Making money from publishing news on smartphones

Other confirmed speakers are:

  • ITN productions editorial director Chris Shaw, to talk about making money from journalism on mobiles.
  • Guardian special projects editor Paul Lewis to talk about mobile newsgathering, and his experience during the English riots last summer.
  • Enders Analysis mobile media expert Benedict Evans, to deliver an overview of the impact of smartphones on the UK media market.
  • Guardian News and Media business director, mobile – Steve Wing.

Conference commercial partner Apica will also be delivering a presentation on how news organisations can ensure their websites remain at peak performance during what is set to be a massive year for news – with the Olympics and the Diamond jubilee.

Content management giant Atex has also signed signed up as a commercial partner.
