The Guardian is making a number of changes to its senior editorial team including replacing sports head Ben Clissitt, who is to leave the paper, with deputy editor Paul Johnson.
Georgina Henry, who launched the Guardian’s Comment is Free website, is to become head of culture to oversee the integration of all output across the Guardian, Observer and website after the election.
Guardian News & Media said in November that it planned to cut more than 100 staff as part of cost saving measures aimed at reducing its current “unsustainable” losses – these cuts were in addition to the 50 or so editorial posts it trimmed earlier in the year.
Clissitt, who became sports editor in April 2000, previously ran the paper’s City office and worked on the G2 supplement.
His replacement, Johnson, will remain as deputy editor of the Guardian as he also takes over responsibility for sports coverage across the Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk.
In addition to Clissitt, the Guardian’s Jerusalem correspondent Rory McCarthy and LA correspondent Dan Glaister are also leaving the paper.
Readers’ editor Siobhain Butterworth is also leaving to return to her former career in law.
Chief leader writer Julian Glover will stand down from his post however he will continue to write for the Guardian.
GNM reopened its voluntary redundancy scheme in September as Tim Brooks, managing director of GNM, warned staff that losses were running at a rate of £100,000 per day and staffing levels would have to be reviewed as a result.
