Editor and Publisher saved from closure

By Phil Scullion

Editor & Publisher, the US equivalent of Press Gazette, has been saved two weeks after announcing its closure.

Duncan McIntosh, a California based publisher of several boating magazines and newspapers, bought the 109-year-old monthly magazine and website yesterday.

New owner, McIntosh, said that when Nielson announced in December it would be closing the publication he knew that he wanted to keep it going:

“Such a critical information source for a newspaper industry so desperately in need of help should not go away.

“I’ve been a reader of E&P over the course of 30 years and know its incredible value to readers and advertisers.”

Editor & Publisher was officially launched in 1901 but traces its history back to 1884 due to a merger with another magazine, The Journalist, which started on that date.

Charles McKeown will continue as publisher, and he said: “Newspapers, which are transforming beyond the printed page to all forms of digital media, simply could not lose the one place where the industry could have a conversation with itself and exchange ideas and best practices for navigating the uncertain waters ahead, exemplified by our Interactive Media Conference which includes cable, TV, radio and other media.”

Mark Fitzgerald who had been an editor-at-large for the E&P, was named as the new editor.

“I’m of course grateful to Duncan for stepping up to keep E&P alive, and I’ve been extremely impressed by the passion and energy he is bringing to this enterprise.

“I’m humbled to be leading a news organization that I’ve always believed produces one of the best news reports of any industry sector.”

The E&P’s website began reporting again immediately upon the close of the transaction yesterday, and there are plans to continue the monthly print schedule starting in February.
