Sales of Daily Mail Plus tablet edition grow to 15,000 per day

By Darren Boyle

Daily Mail Plus is selling almost 15,000 paid for copies per day according to the latest ABCs released today.

According to the figures, in April 2013 sales were just shy of 10,000 per day but by September they had jumped to an average of 14,937.

Over in the Sunday edition of Mail Plus, sales have doubled from almost 6,000 an issue in April to 12,999 in September.

Daily Mail Plus is a special tablet edition of the paper that works on devices such as the Apple iPad.

The edition costs £9.99 per month or £2.99 per week. A single edition is 69p.

According to the details released, the highest sale of the tablet edition was on 30 September of 15,824.

Neil Johnson MD of Mail Plus said: “These are all paid-for subscriptions. Almost all stories from the print edition are in Mail Plus. We also have exclusive video, our coffee break puzzles and 360 photo that people are able to interact with.

“Mail Plus is a very important part of the product mix when you consider the growth of tablets. The biggest growth is in the 45-plus area who are buying this technology.

“The average Mail Plus reader is a higher demographic than the print edition. We also have Mail Online which is truly a global, free-to-air product.

“There is a massive expat potential readership and it is far easier to tap into that market with Mail Plus than distributing the printed product.

“We also have more sport on Mail Plus than the print edition.”

Johnson said Associated Newspapers has no plans to extend Mail Plus to include the Irish edition of the paper although it is possible in the future.

“We are at a very early stage and we are conscious that we need to ensure that the product is of great quality.”

Johnson said his staff has a major job each day redesigning the print addition and putting it into the Mail  Plus style.
