Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Rupert Murdoch says Sun’s Page Three models would be better ‘wearing some fashionable clothes’

By Dominic Ponsford

News Corp proprietor Rupert Murdoch suggested today that he would like to ditch Page Three topless photos from The Sun.

In recent weeks The Sun has been experimenting with picturing clothed, rather than topless, models in the paper.

Writing on Twitter today he said: “Brit feminists bang on forever about page 3. I bet never buy paper I think old fashioned but readers seem to disagree.”

And he added: “Page 3 again. Aren't beautiful young women more attractive in at least some fashionable clothes? Your opinions please.”

Press Gazette revealed last November that The Sun was reviewing Page Three.

Editor of the paper’s fabulous magazine Rachel Richardson said: “It will stay because it’s a pillar of The Sun. I’ve sat through hours of focus groups and the readers love it.

“They would feel very different about The Sun if it wasn’t there. But it doesn’t have to be like the Page Three picture that’s here today.”

The Sun does not currently publish topless Page Three pictures on Saturdays and Sundays and Richardson said back in November: “What we do in the week might change.”
