Solicitor Gary Williams, who advises champion boxer Ricky Hatton, has launched a legal action over promoter Frank Warren’s column in The Sun.
Williams is demanding libel damages from Warren and publisher News Group Newspapers over a piece headed ‘Fatty Ricky should give it up’which appeared last November.
In a writ filed at the High Court, Williams argues the piece claimed that despite being a boxing expert in a position to stop Hatton from boxing, Williams encouraged him to take on a fight which would have put him at serious risk of terrible injury.
Williams claims his personal and professional reputation has been seriously injured, and that he has suffered acute distress and embarrassment.
Warren and News Group have refused to give an undertaking that they will not repeat the allegations at the centre of the piece, the writ alleges.
Bury-based Williams, who has instructed law firm Simons Muirhead and Burton to act for him, is seeking damages and an injunction banning repetition of the allegations.
