The final issue of the News of the World sold 3.8m copies, owners News International confirmed today – up 1.1m on the previous week.
Owner News International claimed retailers ‘were hit by unprecedented demand as people swept up copies of the newspaper’and that stores across the UK were sold out.
The 8,674th edition of the NoW featured a look back at some of its best scoops and since its launch on 1 October 1843, and included a 48-page souvenir pullout featuring some of its greatest splashes.
Advertising space in the paper was provided free to charities and 74 pence from the £1 cover price of every copy sold in the UK will be split equally between three charities: Barnado’s, The Force’s Children’s Trust and the military projects at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity. This means that just over £2m will be going to good causes.
While News International was offering readers who bought a copy on Sunday a free souvenir copy of the paper’s first and final edition, it is now charging £2.95, which includes £1.95 postage and packaging.
For each copy sold the £1 cover price will be donated to charity.
