News UK has bolstered its football broadcasting portfolio after securing the rights to show video clips from top Scottish matches.
Goals and other highlights from Scottish Premiership matches as well as action from some Glasgow Rangers matches will be available to subscribers on the The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times websites later this month. The package will be rolled out to smart phones and tablets later in the season.
Earlier this year, News UK won the right to show highlights of all Barclays Premier League games in England for the next three years. From 2014, it will also show the key action from FA Cup ties and England friendlies.
News UK said it hoped the new deal would “provide a major boost” for the Scottish edition of The Sun.
Mike Darcey, chief executive of News UK, said: “Winning these rights will further strengthen our offering to readers, and ensure the football coverage from our titles is second to none. Award-winning analysis alongside exclusive video of the best action is a compelling combination. Our investment in these rights reflects our determination to secure a sustainable future for our world class journalism.”
The securing of football rights was seen as a major boost to News UK after it made the decision to put its best-selling title, The Sun, behind a paywall from the start of August.
