News International has relaunched the website of the News of the World today as a paid-for site.
The new-look newsoftheworld.co.uk is the third News International site to adopt paid-for access following a similar move with digital versions of The Times and The Sunday Times, which launched in the summer.
Colin Myler, editor of the News of the World, said the site aimed to build on the print edition’s reputation for delivering agenda-setting scoops.
He said: “The new website makes the most of this, giving digital customers the chance to read the week’s biggest stories first, along with exclusive video footage and pictures that won’t be available anywhere else.”
According to News International, the revamped site will offer exclusives, videos and pictures along with a number of new features.
These include a new ‘Quick Flick’feature – enabling readers to jump easily from one story to the next – an improved video player and a new Fabulous magazine section.
The paywalll limits access to those willing to pay £1 for 24-hours or £1.99 for a four-week subscription.
Readers registering with the site will be given £2 free credit which can be spent on two 24-hour hour passes, but only once they have handed over debit credit card details. New subscribers are being offered free access for a month.
Access to the News of The World’s fabulousmag.co.uk site is included in the fee.
News International said that it intends to soon launch an iPad app for the News of The World which will have a weekly charge of £1.19.
The Times and Sunday Times relaunched their websites at the end of May ahead of going behind a paywall in July.
