News International confirms closure of Times science magazine Eureka

By William Turvill

News International has confirmed the closure of monthly Science magazine Eureka – three years after it was launched as a free supplement in The Times.

The last edition will be published this week.

A News International spokesperson said no jobs would be lost as a result of the closure, and that The Times will continue to report on science online and in print.

They said advertising demand has decreased as the “political focus” has shifted fell away from science. Advertisers for the first issue included BAE Systems, Shell and BMW.

The 64-page title, pubished on the first Thursday of every month, was the first monthly science magazine distributed in a national newspaper, covering a range of subjects, from life sciences, to earth sciences.

At the time of its launch, News International said that the title reinforced the company’s “commitment to invest in quality journalism and to expand the award-winning team of science, health and environment writers at The Times”.

According to the National Readership Survey, Eureka had a readership of 552,000 of which the vast majority – 481,000 – were in the more affluent ABC1 category.
