Mirror Group has said The People still has “a long-term future” – as six editorial staff were consulted this week about possible redundancy.
Press Gazette understands that one member of production staff, two in pictures, a part-time administrator and a part time news journalist are affected.
In July 2008, 11 jobs were cut across the Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People as some of their sub-editing operations were merged.
A spokesman for Trinity Mirror‘s national newspapers division said: “Mirror Group remains committed to the People and we believe in its long-term future.
“The title continues to make a significant contribution to our business, and to that end we have invested extra funds to strengthen the paper’s marketing performance this year.
“However, the paper is not exempt from the wider, challenging economic climate.
“In light of this we have to improve the efficiency of the title to ensure it remains as competitive as possible.
“As a result a total of six proposed redundancies are being discussed with staff and the [British Association of Journalists] as part of the People’s editorial restructure.
“We are now in a period of consultation with our employees, however we will try to avoid compulsory redundancies where possible by seeking voluntary redundancies.”
In December, The People was one of the largest fallers in the national newspaper ABCs. It fell 12.2 per cent year on year to 592,306.
