Metro has launched new pull-out Friday football section MatchZone today in what it claims is a first for British newspapers.
The weekly section will complement the paper’s personalised football news app 11versus11, which launched last week.
MatchZone will cover football news from the major leagues from the paper’s sports team as well as news and views from a community of fans and bloggers.
It comes ahead of the start of the new Premier League season on the weekend and will run for the duration of the season.
David Gurney, sports editor at Metro, said: “We are constantly improving our sports offering for readers and MatchZone will give us an exciting new platform to provide a weekly snapshot of everything going on in and around the game.
“As well as previewing the week ahead, there will be more features, analysis and views from those who care the most – the fans.”
David Vokes, sales director at Metro, added: “A regular football pull-out on a Friday has not been done in newspapers before, and alongside the 11versus11 app we are providing advertisers with new ways to connect with Metro’s football-loving audience.”
Betting shop chain Ladbrokes is the main partner in both ventures.
