The first chief reporter of the Murdoch-owned Sun James Lewthwaite has died of cancer aged 74.
Lewthwaite was headhunted from the Daily Mail in 1969 to join The Sun for its relaunch under Rupert Murdoch as a populist tabloid.
According to a report in today’s Sun he travelled the world reporting for the paper for more than 20 years, helping to cement its reputation for exclusives before retiring in 1993.
Editor Dominic Mohan said: “Jim Lewthwaite was one of The Sun’s greatest reporters and helped to build the reputation of the paper in its early days.
“He will be sadly missed. We send our condolences to his family.”
